本文目的

1. 从中国GRE考生的视角，筛选2021年度GRE考生数据报告中和中国考生相关的数据，总结中国GRE考生的2021考试年。

2. 结合考生数据和笔者的教学经验，为未来参加GRE的考生提供备考建议。

重点导读

1.2021年中国GRE考生人数远小于世界考生人数下降幅度，中国籍在家考及境外参考人数大幅上升，GRE成绩选择性提交成绩影响不明显，竞争仍然激烈。

2.中国考生GRE平均分高于世界平均水平，语文分数如果低于153分，或者数学分数低于166分，可能无法在GRE上取得相对于其他中国GRE考生的优势。

3. 申请文科方向考生建议GRE语文保守分155分，冲刺目标分160分。理工科方向GRE数学建议163分以上，商科方向同学数学语文建议都保持160分以上，同时文商科需要额外注意写作分数，保证4.0分及以上。

GRE考生人数的变化

受疫情影响，2021年全球GRE考生数量较2020年减少了约10万人，较过去5年全球平均考生人数下降了32%；2021年中国GRE考生数量较2020年减少了约8千人，较过去5年中国平均考生人数下降了4.93% —— 该下降幅度远小于世界考生人数的下降幅度的32%。由于疫情，大部分院校开始慢慢放开GRE要求，直接提出GRE的成绩是可选择（“optional”）递交。中国GRE考生的减少幅度仍然较小。所以最后决定中国申请者是否参加GRE的主要因素可能不是学校方面，而是其他竞争者。如果其他申请者愿意用GRE成绩来加强对自己能力的证明，这个时候内卷就会发生。

上图中可以看到中国GRE考生在2017年到2019年呈上升趋势，在2019年达到顶峰，在2020年，2021年大幅度下降。对比之下，全世界GRE考生在2017年到2019年呈小幅度下降趋势，在2020年，2021大幅度下降。疫情开始于2019年12月，疫情初期，ETS取消了中国大陆GRE考场的考试，很多考生的备考节奏也因此打乱。

2020年3月ETS推出GRE家考

影响2020年GRE考生人数下降的因素可能还有另外一个因素：中美关系。2018年，川普政府发起的中美贸易战严重影响了中美关系。中美关系在2019年下半年达到谷底。在2020年3月29日，川普更是签署了10043总统令限制部分中国学生入境。由于美国是GRE考生的主要申请国，这些事件可能造成了中国GRE考生人数较前一年下降幅度较大。

但是在2021年，中美关系回暖。2021年中国考生人数较2020年的下降幅度11.96%远小于2021年全球考生人数较2020年的下降幅度21.53%。虽然全世界都受到这场快速蔓延的疫情的影响，但是2021拜登新政府上台，中美关系得到了缓和。虽然10043禁令仍未废除，但是中美航班较疫情初期更为通畅，签证政策也更为缓和。虽然贸易战还有余波，但中美两方的对话频繁。中国GRE考生数量总体代表考生对美国留学的意愿。这个意愿肯定是受到疫情和中美关系的影响，但是中美关系是中国GRE考生独有的风向标。2021年下半年，也就是2021考试年的开头，ETS多次召开内部闭门会议，在中国推广GRE家考。很多考试节奏被耽误的考生通过家考参加了GRE考试。

非常有意思的，2021年中国考生较2020年减少了8千人，为60081人。2021年在中国参加GRE的考生，即在中国线下考场参加GRE的考生数量，为32925人，较2020年在中国线下考场参加GRE的考生数量，减少了约7千人。这减少的7千人对中国考生总人数的减少贡献最多。

GRE平均分

在过去的一年大家可以看到，中国考生的GRE语文平均分数和数学平均分均高于全球GRE考生的平均水平。所以2022年的中国考生要根据这一新的平均分判断自己的GRE分数是否有竞争力。换句话说，语文分数如果低于153分，或者数学分数低于166分，可能无法在GRE上取得相对于其他中国GRE考生的优势。需要注意的是，GRE的平均分仅代表可接受分数的下限，不同的专业对于GRE语文，数学或者写作的要求不相同，后文会详细讨论。

较2020年，2021年中国考生的GRE语文平均分增长了2.8分，为152.3分。这也是首次中国考生平均分突破150分大关。2020年前，中国考生的语文平均分为147分-148.8分。2021年中国考生的数学平均分较2020年，增长了0.9分，为165.6分。在2020前，中国考生数学平均分从未出现类似的变化，稳定在164.7分左右。2021年，中国考生的数学平均分和语文平均分都有大幅度提升。GRE作为标准化考试，考试的难度不会随时间出现大幅度的波动。所以2022年GRE考生不能以考试变简单为由，放松备考。

《GRE2021年考生数据年度报告》明确建议不应用GRE分数比较国家，但是我们利用不同国家的GRE平均分来认识作为中国考生的优势和劣势，来判断和其他申请人相比中国考生的竞争力。2021年中国考生的GRE语文平均分首次逼近美国考生，在2021年前，中国考生和美国考生GRE语文平均分相差约2分。这表明在通过长难句，单词的训练后，中国考生可以弥补甚至超过美国GRE考生的语言基础。但是距离加拿大，新加坡的GRE考生，中国考生的语文平均水平还有一定差距。

中国考生的数学GRE平均分数一直在多国考生中名列前茅。2021年也不例外，可以看到中国考生的数学平均分超过美国考生的数学平均分将近15分，超过加拿大考生将近10分。一个可能的解释来自于中国考生的数学基础教育，GRE数学考察的数学知识往往是国内初中或者高中的内容。2022年的GRE考生如果要保留住这一优势，一定不可轻敌。GRE数学虽然覆盖的知识点是初中或者高中的内容，但是实际考察的是数学推理习惯，在题目中往往留有需要仔细思考的边界条件或特殊情况。

申请专业GRE平均分

申请社会科学，人文学科，法律方向的考生GRE语文平均分高于其他理工科专业。2022准备申请这些专业的考生建议GRE语文的保守目标分数为155分，冲刺目标分数为160分。申请理科，工科方向的考生GRE数学平均分高于其他人文学科。这些方向的未来GRE考生建议GRE数学在163分以上。对于数学，物理，统计，计算机科学方向的同学来说，GRE数学满分能够更好的证明自己的逻辑推理习惯。申请商科方向的同学的数学语文都需要一个不错的分数，建议都保持在160分以上。申请商科，社会科学，人文学科，法律方向的同学还需要额外注意写作的分数，要保证在4.0分及以上。

以下是不同项目在申请网页上对GRE分数的要求，以往录取学生的数据的描述，通过以下信息，2022年的GRE考生可以快速判断自己的目标分数。

金融方向GRE分数目标：语文160分，数学170分

There are no minimum test score requirements to apply for admission consideration. The average GRE quantitative scores for past entering classes, in recent years, rank around 91%. Therefore, it is recommended that your scores in this p be comparable. You can check the percentiles provided along with your scores from ETS to find your ranking and compare. When entering your scores onto the online application be sure to enter your score on each p of the test and to include the percentiles.
